A Visitor's Guide to Starship Leviathan: Part 2

2. CRITICAL CONCERNS

2.1 Where You Live

All persons aboard the Leviathan live in spacious single-level quarters. Three sizes of quarters are available: single cabins for one person, double cabins for two people, and family cabins for groups of
3-6 people. The Leviathan has 924 single cabins, 408 for use by visitors; 630 double cabins, 162 for use by visitors; and 212 family cabins, 36 for use by visitors. All living quarters are completely
private with no monitoring by the sentient computer or security personnel. The doors on each living quarters will open only to those assigned to it or by their commands. The doors lock automatically when
t
he quarters are unoccupied and can be locked by the assigned occupants at any time. Only human security and medical personnel can override the locks on living quarters and this can only be done in
e
mergency situations.

Each living quarters has a living area, dining area, study area, small kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and storage closets. Depending on the layout of the cabin, there may be additional bedrooms and bathrooms.
The living room is equipped with a personal entertainment system consisting of a 2-D screen, 3-D projector, and surround-sound speakers. The kitchen area provides fully automated food preparation and allows f or partially-manual food preparation as well. A small laundry unit is also located in the kitchen. All bedrooms are equipped with null-gravity sleep fields; beds are available upon request. Each bathroom
i
ncludes a jacuzzi/whirlpool tub & shower unit, sink, and toilet.

Visitors can request alternate art objects if those found in their quarters when they arrive are not pleasing to them. Visitors staying longer than 3 weeks may request some color alteration to the decor of ttheir quarters. The humidity and temperature of your quarters can be adjusted to suit your personal preferences. Visitors are requested to keep their quarters reasonably neat and clean. Cleaning services
a
re available for those visitors unable to attend to their quarters. Visitors should be aware that their quarters are scanned regularly by a non-sentient monitoring system which checks on the atmosphere, gravity, and heat sources. This system will respond to many variations of calls for help and will summon immediate assistance. If the monitoring system detects a fire in your quarters it will immediately
spray a fire-extinguishing foam in the affected area or areas. The foam is non-toxic and has no long term health effects.

One of the most interesting features of your quarters is the cabin computer with terminals located in the study area and each bedroom. The cabin computer will easily interface with your personal computer
and gives you access to the Leviathan’s vast library of books, visual entertainment, and aural entertainment, as well as up to date schedules of cultural, educational, and worship activities. You can also use your cabin computer to communicate with anyone on the ship, including myself, as well as make calls to many locations outside the vessel. Most questions you may have about life aboard the Leviathan can b e answered by using your cabin computer.

All quarters and many other areas of the ship have wall mounted depth viewers which can display a variety of computer generated vistas. These depth viewers have been found to help reduce the incidence of claustrophobia among crew members and visitors. The depth viewers can be set to display not only various landscapes, seascapes, and spacescapes, but 2-D and 3-D artwork as well. We recommend that you leave at least one depth viewer in your quarters set to a vista.

Should something in your quarters require repair, please inform one of your Shipboard Guides or the sentient computer. Please also let us know if you need additional toiletries, foodstuffs for manual food
preparation, or other items to make your stay more comfortable.

2.2 Caring for Your Children

Your children are welcome aboard the Leviathan. We offer a wide variety of activities in which they can participate including educational classes, nature walks, exercise sessions, athletic programs, art shows, musical and dramatic performances, and tours of the ship. Your children are allowed everywhere that you are aboard the Leviathan and we encourage them to join in most recreational activities. We have about four hundred children of our own aboard and try to integrate them as much as possible into shipboard life. You will see older children crew members assisting with many tasks; these tasks provide
t he children with valuable training as well as offer them opportunities to be of service. If you have older children interested in participating in this kind of activity with our older children, please have t hem see your Shipboard Guides for details.

There are two nurseries aboard the Leviathan for the care of infants and small children. The visitor nursery is located on deck B20 and the crew nursery is located on deck E60. You may leave your
infant or small child at either nursery for set periods of time, but you will be summoned if your child becomes unruly or an emergency situation arises. Visitors are requested not to make excessive use of the nurseries and are reminded that they are responsible for their c
hildren’s behavior for the duration of their stay aboard the Leviathan. Rest assured of your children’s safety. I as sentient computer can easily track your children should they get lost, and assist them i f necessary. Also, I will warn them should an emergency arise and keep them from entering dangerous areas of the ship.

2.3 Where to Eat

Meals are available at any time from fully automated food preparation units in all lounges throughout the ship as well as the unit in your living quarters. Visitors are welcome in all crew, scientist, and
observation lounges, but we request that you use the visitor and recreation lounges for regular meals outside of your living quarters whenever possible. Occasional banquets and receptions are held in the
l arge dining facility on decks E66 and E67. This is where you can most easily meet the command staff and other high level crew members. The large dining area also offers manually prepared food provided by o ur Support Service staff. If you wish to prepare your own meals or have special dietary needs, please see your Shipboard Guides for assistance.

2.4 Tell Me Where It Hurts

The Leviathan has two main medical facilities, one located in Zone B/Visitor Section on decks B17 and B18 and the other located in Zone E/Crew Section on decks E61 through E65. In addition there is an emergency medical facility in Zone G/ Engineering Section located on decks G10 and G11. Each main medical facility is fully equipped to handle a wide variety of medical situations from t he simple and routine to the complex and traumatic. Both main medical facilities provide physical and mental health services and are equipped with the latest tissue regeneration and personality r econstruction equipment.

DNA and blood samples are taken from each visitor when they board the Leviathan to help the medical staff should treatment be necessary. Physical and mental check-ups are available upon request. Visitors should be aware that a variety of conception prevention devices are available from the medical staff. Visitors are requested t o use the visitor medical facility whenever possible and will be taken there in most emergency medical situations. Since I monitor all public areas of the ship, I will immediately dispatch a medical team if I observe a circumstance requiring medical attention. Visitors faced with a medical emergency in their quarters should call out to alert the non-sentient monitoring system of their need for assistance.

Visitors who stay in their quarters for a prolonged period of time will be visited by their Shipboard Guides or security personnel to make sure they are alright. Visitors suffering a medical predicament that cannot be treated aboard the Leviathan will be immediately transported to a hospital. If this is not possible, the patient will be offered the option of being
put into stasis until transport can be arranged. In the case of death while aboard the ship, the body of the visitor will be treated in accordance to the preferences stated of the questionnaire filled out when the visitor boarded the Leviathan. Any memorial services performed will likewise mirror the wishes of the deceased as stated on the questionnaire.

I will conclude this section on critical concerns by reminding you that the Leviathan is not a starliner catering to tourists but a space-faring community performing vital exploratory and defense functions
for the Star Guard Network. Since many of you are aboard only as passengers on the way to some other destination, your responsibilities are minimal, but we request that you make every effort to fulfill
t hese obligations to the best of your abillity. There are four basic duties we expect you to perform: maintaining your quarters' cleanliness, allowing crew members to perform their routine tasks undisturbed, keeping track of your children, and obeying the laws of our shipboard society. Visitors who are serving as temporary members of our Science Service will have additional duties specified e
lsewhere.
